Theresa May visits Claires Court Theresa May visited the Geography Department of Claires Court Schools on Friday to see the work they have put into this year's 'Send My Friend to School' campaign entitled 'One Goal.' The boys and girls in Years 7,8 and 9 have all had a Geography lesson about the Millennium Development goals in which they learned about the barriers to education that affect 72 million children around the world. They have decorated segments of a scarf, which measures approx 100m, that they have hung throughout the School. View Gallery	8

The Mayor Opens College Pre and Junior Prep Playground We were delighted to welcome the Worshipful Mayor of the Royal Borough, Catherine Bursnall to open our brilliant new playground and to present the prizes at the Pre and Junior Prep Sports Day. View Gallery	15

Pre Prep Ice Cream Parlour Fun Pre Prep pupils gave visiting parents and friends a real treat when they ran their Ice Cream Parlour this week. The girls were able to put to practical use the work they had done in lessons as well as learning how to wait at table. A charming event and well attended – perhaps they will need a bigger 'restaurant' in future? View Gallery	7
Sixth Form Summer Ball - elegance personified Our Sixth Form students really pulled out the stops and enhanced the elegance of Taplow House Hotel with their own grace and elegance! Their behaviour was impeccable and students and staff mingled, laughed, chatted a, drank and danced until midnight in the beautiful gardens. View Gallery	13
Well done to College girls for their Summer Showcase The girls in Years 7 to 9 put on a veritable feast of entertainment displaying their talent and enthusiasm. Each year group performed a selection of songs - Year 7 from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Annie, Year 8 with Alice in Wonderland and Oliver and Year 9 with excerpts from 'The Boyfriend'. Intrepid Year 12 geographers survived Yorkshire Year 12 geographers spend a long week-end in Yorkshire completing a Field Study as part of their A Level course. The weather was kind to them and they were great ambassadors for the School. View Gallery	12
Summer Fantastic Fete! Well done to everyone who supported the Summer Fete last Saturday, in whatever capacity. A great day was had by all and tremendous work and effort gave a terrific day and result. Caribbean Cricket is no walk over and taken very seriously - by the dads, anyway! Football Tournaments, Hook a Duck, Bouncy Castles, Bucking Bronco, coconut shy, burgers, teas, Pimm's, Country Dancing... just a phenomenal range of attractions. College Pre and Junior Prep girls making music Parents were treated to an afternoon of wide range of music at the concert on Wednesday. These informal concerts are always lovely occasions and give the girls the chance to show case what they have been learning in class. There is no specific preparation by the girls for these concerts; they simply play or sing whatever piece or song they are currently working on in class. As usual they did not disappoint. We were privileged to listen to a range of piano, violin, clarinet, guitar and drum recitals; we heard some beautiful solo singing; Pre-Prep delighted us with a medley from the musicals and Junior Prep opened the concert with their beautiful rendition of 'Just a Single Candle'. The concert closed with the whole of Junior Prep 'Rocking around the Clock'. View Gallery	7

Claires Court Schools athletes were active at the ISA Regional Athletics Championships Well done to all the athletes across the sites who took part in the ISA Regional Athletics last week. Senior and Junior boys and girls combined won the overall cup and our Junior boys won the ISA Junior Boys' Cup. A number of our athletes will now take part in the National Championships, representing ISA London West, next Wednesday View Gallery	10
U10 IOW Cricket Tour Both teams enjoyed a most successful and busy weekend, visiting Alum Bay, swimming in the sun, winning some games and only losing one, but overall having a thoroughly good time. The boys were excellent ambassadors for the School and for cricket. They played the games in great spirit and were duly rewarded with good results. Very well done to all the boys who were on tour. New playground equipment at College thanks to PTA Wow - have we got a fabulous new playground and markings! Pre and Junior Prep girls have been thoroughly enjoying themselves experimenting with all the fun and games they can have on their new equipment. 3 for 3 Charities receive their cheques The three charities supported in our 3 for 3 appeal this year - The Thames Valley Adventure Playground, The Alexander Devine Children's Cancer Trust and Sebastian's Action Trust, all met at Claires Court on Thursday to receive their share of the £16,479.42 raised across the three sites. Ski Trip Fun and Successful Return We were delighted that our tour operators, SkiPlan, managed to transport our party back from Alpe d'Huez no more than 20 hours later than expected. Despite a long coach journey, an endless queue at passport control at Calais and a puncture on the motorway, all arrived tired, happy and relieved to be back. View Gallery	16

Sixth Form boys v girls charity netball match Sixth Form boys and girls played their annual charity netball match in somewhat damp conditions. Spectators ran for cover but our hardy players continued with the game. The girls had an impressive 8-5 victory over the boys and whilst the boys showed more skill than in some previous matches, accuracy of shooting wasn’t one of them. Well done one and all and many thanks for the charity donations which were added to the ever-rising total for 3 for 3. View Gallery	8
Fond but sad farewell to Mrs Rogg This last week has seen a series of events to say 'farewell' to Karen Rogg after nearly 32 years at Ridgeway. She joined Ridgeway in 1978 becoming Head Teacher in 1989. Her leadership has been outstanding and we know that she will be sorely missed but no-one begrudges Karen the opportunity to spend more time with husband Howard as well as friends and family. Nursery Farm Visit Nursery and Transition children enjoyed a visit from 'Basil and Crew' and greatly enjoyed their experience being close to the animals and being able to stroke and groom them. View Gallery	14
College Racing with pancakes! The weather rained off the planned Pancake Race last week (yes, we know Pancake Day was the week before that, but it was half term!) so this Tuesday saw an assortment of pupils and staff throughout the year groups, racing down the Astroturf, pans and pancakes in hand. Snow Joke Snow arrived, mercifully - at the end of term, and did not cause too much disruption to our term. Nursery continued to operate on Friday although Holiday Club was unable to do so as staff were not able to make the journey in. A little bit of fun was had by the girls on Tuesday when we had the first snowfall and Nursery enjoyed the snow on Friday. View Gallery	13

Santa came to town - well, to College! So much excitement on Thursday when Santa and his reindeer arrived at College. The younger end of the School gathered outside the College to sing their hearts out - but they had to sing loud enough to Santa to hear so that he would feel the siren call and visit with his goodies. Joint Senior Music Concert A packed hall was entertained last week by a wide range of styles at the Joint Senior Music Concert. The performances varied from solos through to the Samba Band Group as well as ensembles and groups, from piano to voice to guitar and all the way round and back again! View Gallery	15
Year 9 boys and their exploding (or not!) volcanoes Year 9 geography boys were set the task to make a volcano over the half term. These were judged by Mr Rayer last week. The winning 'exploding' volcano was judged to be that made by Karran Corpaul and Jack Townsend was felt to have produced the best non-exploding volcano. View Gallery	5
Year 11 French students exploring Normandy Our Year 11 boys and girls studying French spent a week of half term immersed in French at the Chateau de la Baudonnière in Normandy. They participated in a wide range of activities, speaking French all the time! View Gallery	14
Year 6 study week at Barton Hall The Year 6 boys and girls spent a highly enjoyable week at Barton Hall in South Devon where they studied rivers, rock pool organisms and map skills. They also had a lot of fun engaging in a range of daring activities. View Gallery	14
Year 8 Visit Lulworth As ever with the Geography Department, they can always find a reason to make a trip to somewhere scenic, and ironically, the sun always seems to shine on them. Year 8 boys and girls spent a happy day looking at rock formations and much more and this will undoubtedly have brought to life the work they carry out in the classroom. Football Tournament at Firework Party Much fun was had at the Football Tournament which took place prior to the Family Firework Party last Saturday. Six teams entered and the Sixth Form were delighted to win the Tournament, wresting the trophy from the staff Odd Socks team. Well done our Sixth Formers. Year 12 carry out a rural study in Oxfordshire Year 12 students were out and about in Oxfordshire looking at the rural communities of Witney, Woodstock, Bladon, Cassington and Long Hangborough, seeking out relevant information. The work carried out on this day forms part of the students' learning and knowledge for the AS module on Managing Rural Change and Managing Tourism. View Gallery	7

Oarsome Row by Claires Court boys! The boys of Claires Court School Boat Club took on the challenge of rowing from Oxford to Maidenhead in a fleet of 3 coxed quads. Over the two day adventure the boys rowed over 100km. They successfully managed to negotiate their way through 21 locks, not an easy task! Many of the locks were so narrow that the boys boats and oars only just fitted in. As the temperatures rose the number of pleasure boats on the river increased massively leading to the boys having to queue for locks with much larger boats! There was amusement from other river users at each lock as the boys had much needed refreshments thrown at them by the team of parents who 'lock hopped' the entire route! View Gallery	14

Year 12 find Majestic Malham The AS Geographers have just returned from a 4 day trip to Malham Tarn in Yorkshire. While there, they investigated how a river changes as it flows downstream. Wellies and waterproofs were put to good use as groups took measurements at three sites. View Gallery	11

College 'Oliver' is a smash hit! Well done to the Senior girls at College who staged a fantastic production of 'Oliver' this week under the direction of Mrs Kemp, Mrs Robinson and Mrs Woolliscroft, ably supported by Miss Salmon on piano and Mr Elliott on lighting and sound. Young Scientists enjoy their day Year 8 scientists Mia Axtell, Margaux Lerclercq, Chloe Reeder and Molly Ross represented Claires Court at Salters' Festival of Chemistry at Reading University this week. They had a fantastic day helping to solve a murder, saving the Starship Enterprise from disaster and finally sampling ice cream made using liquid nitrogen. Well done to our Year 12 scientists in the Schools' Analyst Competition On Wednesday 22 April, James Pleace, James Scarlett and Phil Crisp represented Claires Court Schools in the Schools Analyst Competition at the University of Reading. Rowing Training Camp The School's Boat Club once again travelled down to Wimbleball Lake, Dulverton in Somerset for our annual training camp. Twenty three boys from Years 8 through to 10 were in attendance. View Gallery	17
Sixth Form Boys' v Girls' Fancy Dress Netball As the true sports that they are, boys and girls dressed up (spectators too - for a fee of £2) to re-dress the balance on the boys v girls sports matches. In a fiercely fought contest the girls won 9-5 and emerged victorious. They raised £184 to add to the 3 for 3 Charity Week total. View Gallery	16
BBC School Report Day Claires Court turned into a hive of activity on Thursday with BBC Radio Berkshire and Maggie Philbin on site recording interviews and news as it happened. U18's win ISA National Rugby 7's The Sixth Form 7's travelled to Cheltenham earlier this week to take part in the National U18 Rugby 7's and emerged victorious with the trophy. A poor result close to the beginning of the tournament galvanised them into action and they romped through to win. View Gallery	7
Year 7 girls visited Intech, Winchester Year 7 College girls paid a visit to Intech, the Science centre near Winchester where they had the opportunity to explore a range of scientific 'adventures'. Very much a hands on experience with a great deal of fun - and learning. View Gallery	16
The Sixth Form Mad Hatter's Tea Party Congratulations to the students who managed to get through the morning in costumes on an unusually warm and delightfully sunny Saturday morning. The children were enchanted and it certainly added another dimension to the Easter Egg Hunt. View Gallery	11

Horse Riders competed well in their first competition he Claires Court Riding Team entered the Bradfield College Inter Schools Show Jumping Competition at Berkshire College of Agriculture. Ruth Potton, Sarah Allerton and Maddie Jones came 6th out of 22 teams. Maddie Jones came 4th in the individual with Rachel Platt 5th in the individual out of 85 riders in Class 2. All the girls rode and jumped well and were a credit to the School. View Gallery	14
Year 7 went on a geography trip to Rushall Farm Year 7 boys and girls went on a geography trip to Rushall Farm near Pangbourne and also studied the River Pang. Although there were no lambs born on that day, they were able to have a cuddle with some who were 2 or 3 days old! View Gallery	11

U16 Football Tour to East Anglia After last year's tremendous success, February 2009 saw the Claires Court Under 16 Football Tour to Elveden Forest take place. Sixteen boys from Year 11 plus 4 brave staff members enjoyed the hospitality and fun of Center Parcs. View Gallery	8

Ridgeway U9, 10 and U11 success at the National Schools Rugby Tournament Ridgeway enjoyed success at the National Schools Rugby Tournament South East regional round last weekend. The tournament took place at Epsom College in sub zero temperatures. The cold and wind chill of -7C bit nothing to dampen the boys spirits or style of rugby play as the Under 9, Under 10 and Under 11 teams from Ridgeway played some excellent rugby to all qualify for the finals of this prestigious tournament. Ridgeway boys serve 'Le Petit Dejeuner' Boys in Year 5 enjoyed a French breakfast with some ordering their food in French and others acting as waiters. The experience enabled them to put their linguistic skills to the test in a fun and purposeful way. View Gallery	5

Nursery and Transition - Animal Christmas Crackers And crackers they were – cracking good! The boys and girls of Nursery and Transition became elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, tigers, pigs, chickens, ducks, sheep and reindeer, all playing their part with enthusiasm. Sixth Form girls v boys rugby for Cancer Research A hard fought match was played between the sporty (and not so!) boys and girls in the Sixth Form. Spectators were able to pay the princely sum of 20p to vote for the best dressed player with the proceeds going to Cancer Research. Sadly (!) the boys won 4-3, although one could be forgiven for not taking the ref too seriously in his pink feather boa!! This was also 'pink day' at College allowing the wearing of a pink item and with a cake sale too, all in aid of Cancer Research. View Gallery	10
Santa called at College Excitement ran high at College on Thursday when Santa arrived in a vintage MG. Pre and Junior-Prep girls sang their hearts out to let him know that they were waiting for him – and it worked. After handing out gifts to the staff, Santa then visited the classrooms giving presents to the girls. To round their day off, all the pupils throughout the School (all sites) enjoyed a tremendous Christmas lunch followed by the Pre-Prep and Junior-Prep performances in the afternoon and evening. U19 County Netball Champions Massive congratulations to the U19 Netball Squad - winners of the County Netball Tournament. The squad fought hard through all the levels to regain the County Shield. They now go on to represent Berkshire in the National Schools' South Region Tournament in January. View Gallery	10

Tri-It October 2008 98 competitors entered the Tri-It with the winners being the team of 3P with a time of 39.15, The Troll, the Duck and the Mop second in 40.06 and the Team Woodhouse third in 41.04. Well done to Billy Mallett with the fastest time as an individual competitor of 35.43 and the fantastic Toby Jones from Year 7 who came in at 41.40, seventh overall out of the 29 teams entered. Phoenix Re-opening We are delighted that Brian Williams, President of the RFU was able to join us to perform the opening ceremony of the extended Clubhouse at Phoenix. Overall they brought home 15 gold medals and broke 3 national records. World's Largest Lesson - April 2008 On Wednesday 23 April, our Year 7's in geography lessons took part in a World Record attempt - we registered to take part in The World's Largest Lesson. The purpose of this is to help remind governments of their promise to provide education to all children. There are still 72 million children without access to education. We are going to design and annotate cards - each card will represent one of the 72 million children. These will be displayed and then sent to our Prime Minister. We would like to say Thank You to all the boys who took part, and as you can see, much enjoyed the lesson. If there is anyone who would like to help and make a card, please see Miss Murdock. Rowing Training Camp Our rowers enjoyed an intensive and successful training camp. This was the first time boys from Year 8 through to Year 11 and Year 11 girls had been able to participate in this Camp together.
