Reception - Year 2

Young Girls Reading TogetherGirls are welcomed into Reception at the start of the academic year in which they celebrate their fifth birthday, from our own Nursery and other local nurseries.

Reception

The core curriculum for Reception is identified as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

There are seven areas of learning and development that shape the educational programme in the Early Years setting. All areas are interconnected and applied through termly topics:

The prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language / Physical Development / Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The specific areas are:

  • Literacy /  Mathematics / Understanding the World / Expressive Arts & Design

In Reception, learning is a balance of pupil initiated activity and teacher supported work. Independent writing is developed and basic number skills embedded, time is spent exploring the natural world where pupils investigate and develop their ideas.

Years 1 & 2

In Years 1 and 2, the core subjects of maths and English become more defined. Your daughter will receive a daily English lesson focusing on reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.  During the daily maths lesson girls develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical language, their reasoning, problem solving and application skills.

Learning is still centred around topic based themes with other subjects such as science, history and geography being introduced within the topic web as shown in the relevant curriculum statement.

SPECIALIST SUBJECTS

Music and French are taught from Reception and beyond.  Our girls have timetabled lessons in physical education, games and swimming each week. They will also start to explore the digital arena as iPads and Chromebooks are used to enhance learning through games and activities.
