  • Mr Spanswick's Words Lent 11

Well, it’s been a fairly standard week at school. Nothing much occurring...except that we were treated to arguably the most engaging, humbling and emotional performance on Tuesday evening, from our Year 5 and 6 boys and girls, along with several Year 4 musicians.  I am still waking in the morning to hear the song ‘Bring him home’ from Les Miserables in my head. Mr Rowan and Mrs Stevenson should be so proud of their boys and girls. And actually, I should mention our outstanding Reception boys who travelled to Bucklebury Farm on Wednesday to experience ‘real outdoor life’ - their behaviour was impeccable.

It's amazing how popular you can become by cancelling a day of school due to bad weather! Anyone would think that three day weekends were a popular phenomenon! In all seriousness, I would like to thank you all for being patient at pick up on Thursday last week, and for your kind words to the staff who were working hard to ensure the safety of all the children.

Wow! What a week we have had! Firstly Mr Spanswick has been unwell since half term and Mrs Nott unfortunately broke her ankle on Wednesday evening, so you’re left with me. We wish them both speedy recoveries.

To celebrate our half term break, this weeks Heads’ Blog comes in the form of pictures! And what amazing snaps they are! Whether it be our Pyjama life saving swimmers, our Year 4 pupils' outstanding English leaflet project, Year 1’s Valentines present for me, or our impressive Under 9 Football Tournament winners, the arrival of some sun and rather cold winter breeze has brought with it success, enjoyment and a very happy Headteacher!

I hope you all enjoy your half term holidays, and I look forward to seeing you on Monday 19 February.

As we move closer to half term, the school is drawn again towards our considerable efforts supporting the charity groups whom we hold so close to our hearts. The stories behind The Link Foundation and Rosie’s Rainbow and the tireless work of their founders, Una Loughrey and Carolyn Mayling, inspire me every day to ensure that my staff and I present our pupils with the right perspective on life and to encourage an active interest in their local community. The traits of modesty and selflessness amongst our boys were two areas that our visiting inspectors picked up on immediately last week and lavished great praise on the pupils and staff for this.

Earlier this week, Mrs Stay and I compiled the Pupil Voice suggestions for how we can spend some of the PTA’s hard earned money on various items in school. There were some brilliant ideas, as well as some rather unusual ones! However, for me, the best suggestion came from one pupil who stated he felt the teachers need a Spa day!

Our first week of fixtures has been such a success. Our Under 9 team played their first football matches for the school against an extremely strong St Paul’s team, and every match was very close. Mr Barber also noted the exemplary behaviour the boys demonstrated while visiting this big London school, and he was very proud of the boys attitude, character shown in the games, and drive to do their best.

Another week gone, another celebration of success in our assembly this morning, and yet another mass of happy faces before me today remind me constantly how much I will miss this role in the school come July. I was lucky enough to give out over 40 merits, some of our first orange and green belts for Multiplication mastery in Maths, a distinction for Ethan Olikara in Grade 1 Piano, two worthy Rabbit winners, and a wonderful letter from HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Rishi Kanchubotla in Year 1 thanking him for his kind wishes on their announcement of their engagement. No two days are the same in this job!

    Happy New Year!!

I hope you were all able to to enjoy a peaceful Christmas break, and seeing the boys tearing around the playground yesterday, it would seem they have had a very good rest and have lots of energy to burn!

The Lent Term, while being the shortest of the three, is often considered to be the busiest. We have so much to look forward to including workshares, joint music concerts and musical visits to London, football matches and cross country events, Sevens rugby festivals, sports tours to the West Country, books and bushcraft evenings, French breakfasts, regional and national chess tournaments, our charity week, visits to the Living Rainforest, the Roald Dahl Museum, the National Archives…….I could go on!! All in all, lots of fun and hard work to be getting on with!
