Mr Wilding’s Words Summer 2

Clearly I jinxed the arrival of summer with my words last week; storm Hannah blew the Circus away last weekend, and it seems we can expect some ground frosts returning this weekend in time for the Bank Holiday. Apologies all.

Year 10's trip to the Ypres salient as part of their History studies proved to be the most moving experience for us all. The first photograph shows our party standing alongside the grave of Lieutenant Malcolm Carswell, formerly Maths teacher on the College site and husband to May Lillias Inglis, a daughter of the Inglis family who founded the school, now part of Claires Court. Lieutenant Carswell died aged 27.

The second photo shows our wreath laying party at the Menin Gate Last Post ceremony last Friday evening, in memory of all those former pupils and staff who lost their lives in the Great War. To be honest, both moments were unique and inspiring for those involved.

Whilst we were away in Belgium, Storm Hannah arrived and literally ‘blew away’ the PTA circus event at Junior Boys on Saturday; we are now seeing how best to reschedule, and apologies obviously to all those whose afternoon of ‘fun under the Big Top’ did not materialise, though you'll be able to read in the bulletin this week that we have been able to reschedule for later in June.

Back at the day job, evening activities are all back under full steam; athletics and cricket teams need to keep an eye on their return to school arrangements via https://www.clairescourtsport.com/ to keep parents in the loop.

Next week sees Year 11 in for their last week of formal lessons before their GCSE examinations commence in full, though they have already been enjoying their Art, Drama and MFL assessments this term. Next Friday we welcome their parents and guardians to a closing celebration and prize-giving on Friday late afternoon with their sons. Please arrive from 5pm for a 5.30pm start; parking should be available in the school grounds for most, and weather being kind, we’ll be assembling outside the sports hall on the astro.
