Mr Wilding’s Words Autumn 11

It is GCSE Mocks week here at Senior Boys, a time when Year 11 are able to tell whether all the work, advice and skills development put in over the last 18 months has paid dividends.
Once all the papers have been marked and released back to candidates in the New Year, we all can judge what has gone well, and where to apply additional focus to ensure even more successful outcomes for the real thing in 2020. What is impressive is just how well the candidates have prepared themselves, and those many chats they are having with their teachers’ post test, do highlight just how well the boys are ‘thinking about their thinking’, real evidence that they are being sufficiently metacognitive at this stage!
It is also noticeable just how many are continuing on with all their other activities too, proving the age old adage that busy people seem to be better at time management and that idle hands make light work. Senior Boys Alumni, Sam MacGregor is completing his BSc in Human Geography at Cardiff University, but he still finds time to assist in running the Welsh student Radio station, Xpress Radio. Sam won best male presenter at the National Student Radio Awards at the Indigo O2 in London on Thursday 7 November, and he really is making ‘waves’ out there in commercial media, one to watch for the future!
The Ist XV had a nice win against ACS Cobham Wednesday, 29-21, and the U13 boys were a tad disappointed only to draw against RGS High Wycombe on Thursday, 25-25, letting in the equalising try in the last moments of the game. This weekend sees three of our Sixth Form sailors down at Portland in the RYA schools match racing championships, sailing one of the 2012 Olympic’s 6m Elliott boats.
