Mr Wilding's Words Week 8

Remembrance day on Wednesday was really well supported by our community choosing to 'wear red to remember', and I am delighted that Senior Boys were able to add £315.85 to our school’s donation to the British Legion. It’s clear from personal correspondence with parents that our knowledge of loss in our own families continues to emerge from family archives. I wondered two years ago whether having celebrated the centenary of the Armistice, as a country we might now choose to forget. As we all now can see, far from it. History has this ghastly habit of repeating itself; the centenary of the creation of the Tomb of the Unknown Warriors in Westminster Cathedral and the permanent installation of the Cenotaph, literally an empty tomb, in Whitehall is marked by the emergence anew of a world-wide pandemic. This century sees a new frontline of doctors and nurses, and our teaching lesson at Monday’s Assembly was very much to include the wider range of Poppy colours now used to include more in this Remembrance act.
Thanks to our Year 11 form tutors and parents for their excellent involvement in our pupil mentoring sessions. Whilst it is impossible for the time being for us to gather together, reserving the time to work together online seems still to be building closer support mechanisms for our GCSE exam cohort, for whom we must be very focussed to ensure they are able to give of their very best. The follow-on Virtual Open Evening for Sixth Form entrants (recording here) was the best supported event so far of the term, with 109 different families ‘visiting’ to hear more of our programme. We have 75 places available in Year 12, and I encourage early completion of subject choices so that pupil’s specific mix of subject choices enter our consideration for September 2021.
Amongst all this serious activity, Mr Miller Head of Year 7, has been orchestrating a new short film, 'a day in the life of a Claires Court Senior Boy'. I am indebted to director and producer Mandy Temple, creator of the Junior Boy version seven years ago, who is of course back in harness, and we hope this new film will give new parents some additional insights into what makes Senior Boys tick!
We don’t yet have a ‘red carpet’ event for the premiere, but we’ll let you know soon enough once all the scenes are in the ‘can’!
