Mrs Roger's words Autumn week 3

‘Why bother?’ A provocative question posed to our new Year 12 cohort this week in relation to applying to university! Jane Marshall, former Imperial College Admissions Tutor and now independent consultant, brings a witty and rhetorical approach to her presentation.
Tongue in cheek, she asked the students why they were considering university; for the parties and the social life (probably not!), most likely they were fully focused on finding out more about the subject they want to study and to build their transferable skills ready for employment and independent living. And this, of course, is ultimately the reason our students decide to go on to take undergraduate degrees although the lure of the non-academic aspects of living away from home and making choices and decisions for themselves is also a key factor.
As this year progresses, Year 12s will have increasingly more guidance through PSHE, presentations from other university representatives and a visit to the UCAS Higher Education Exhibition next spring as they research the most suitable courses and universities for them.
Year 13 have taken a ‘time-out’ this week from their UCAS applications to focus on their internal exams, which many have described as very helpful, an opportunity to practice crucial time management and exam techniques as well as pitting themselves against past paper questions, applying the knowledge accrued over the past year. We return to the task next week.
The weekend will be a welcome break for them and no doubt, for you too. Enjoy it!
