Nursery's words Lent week 3

This week, we moved on from ‘Under the Sea’ to ‘Under the Ground’ where the children’s main focus was all about worms. In each classroom there were habitats which worms would explore which gave lots of opportunities for using preposition words.
The children used their senses to explore the various types of mud which had been created; clay, soil and even chocolate powder. They then went into the digging area to look for real worms.
The Bumble Bee class had their first pond dipping experience and despite the cold weather we found lots of creatures under the water: a water beetle, water flies and baby newts. Some of them were even brave enough to hold them!
Sensory play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills. There are many benefits that may go unnoticed, such as the development of abilities to focus and block out distractions.
Sensory play is an important part of childhood and, within reason, there are really no limits to what you can use in sensory activities. Nature can often be your best friend when it comes to sensory play! Further reading on sensory play
