Rowing Army Secure Multiple Wins At Hammersmith Regatta
Hammersmith Regatta, which kick-starts the rowing season, took place on Saturday 28 April. This year’s regatta was busier than ever for our Boat Club, with almost all the entire club racing.
Many of the Seniors, in Years 11 to 13, came home with silverware, after impressive wins in the School/Junior Quads, J16 Eights and the Senior Double Sculls event. The boys narrowly missed a win in the Coxless Fours event which they made the final in.
The J15 Juniors, in Years 9 and 10, entered two coxed quads. Both crews faced Guildford Rowing Club in the first round. The boys set off with a feisty strong start and settled into a strong rhythm. Despite battling some gusty winds and rain showers, both crews performed well but unfortunately lost out on a semi-final spot and a chance to race each other for the win.
For the J14 team, a strong race in an octuple against Fulham Reach Boat Club saw the boys’ progress into the semi-final against King’s College School. After a tough race over the1500m course, the boys managed another win to move into the final against Latymer Upper School. The final was neck and neck in the first 500m however Latymer went on to win the race. In the U14 Quad races, two Claires Court teams put in superb efforts against Latymer Upper School and Guildford Rowing Club but both narrowly lost.
Tom Jost, Head of Rowing, said:
“Congratulations to all our crews, who showed determination and team spirit in their races. It’s fantastic to bring home the silverware that we did, and it’s a testament to their hard work and commitment to rowing. The Regatta helped the boys gain valuable experience to learn from going forward, and we look forward to what the rest of the season will bring”.
We appear to be on a winning streak, as on Tuesday 13 March the J16 team won the quad scull event at the National Junior Sculling Head at Dorney Lake.
