Strawberry Science
It was an exciting opportunity for Year 10 boys when they earnt how to extract the DNA from a strawberry.
They started off by crushing a strawberry in a small locktight bag with some buffer solution that contained washing up liquid; this broke down the cell walls, cell membrane and nuclear membrane. Next they filtered the extract, then decanted some ice cold ethanol on top of the strawberry extract, and DNA, the 'code of life', was visible as a mass of bubbles. It then got really interesting as the boys used a wooden splint to collect a thick strand of DNA!
