Great Finish at the Hockey Cup Competition

Claires Court arrived at Bradfield College on a high, winning the Year 7 Hockey League the previous night, to take part in the U11 County Hockey. The following report has been written by PE Teacher Katie Hudson:

The girls were first up against Hawkdon school who they knew nothing about. The team got off to an excellent start pressuring the ball inside their attacking ‘D’, this allowed them to score 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of the game. Fantastic goals both coming from Harriet Taylor-West with the girls winning 2-0.

Claires Court then faced St Andrew’s School in the second group game. Temi and Eleanor defended superbly throughout the whole game, clearing the ball wide. St Andrews finished off the game with another goal, making it 2-0.

Junio Girls U11 County HockeyAnother physical game was against Lambrook B, however the girls showed intensity and determination to keep possession of the ball. Yana reacted quickly to a side-line ball and passed it straight up into attack to Amelie, who then passed it across the goal for an easy tap in by Harriet Taylor West. Claires Court held an outstanding 1-0 win.

Amazingly they came second in their group, which meant they were through to the cup competition. The girls were up against St Pirans, Highfield A and Lambrook A. Claires Court got off to a great start drawing 0-0 with St Pirans and Highfield A. The last game of the cup competition group was against Lambrook A, which we deservedly won 2-1 in the final seconds of the game.  The girls had definitely earned their place in the semifinals of the cup competition, playing against St Andrews who they met in the first round.

The team knew this was going to be a tough match but had every faith in themselves. Claires Court had several attacks but could not find the back of the net. St Andrews caught CC on the break twice and scored from well-rehearsed short corners resulting in a 2-0 loss.

Claires Court found themselves playing for 3rd or 4th place against St Pirans. This was a very even game, where both teams were exhausted. The girls managed to find the back of the net 2 minutes before the finals whistle. St Pirans were awarded a last minute short corner, and with an excellent stop off the line from Eleanor Dries, kept the game at a 1-0 win.

Myself and Miss Barrett thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and were very impressed by the level and skill the girls showed. This is an outstanding achievement, as no junior hockey team has finished 3rd in the cup competition for a very long time, well done girls!”
