Armistice Day

Remembrance Day was recognised in different ways across the School this year.

Nursery children each made a poppy and then collated them to make a field of poppies. Junior Girls held a Remembrance assembly focused on the women who helped change the path Britain was taking as a result of WW1, including Flora Sandes, the first female soldier in WW1, making it all the way to Sergeant Major, and Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson, who set up a hospital in London as two of the first female surgeons, treating 26,000 soldiers. The Junior Girls choir sang ‘We Will Remember’ and girls laid wreaths.

Junior Boys also held a Remembrance assembly, which included a vocal and guitar performance of ‘The Remembrance Song’ by Sixth Formers Josh and Sam, a rendition of ‘We Will Remember’ by the Junior Boys choir and a two minutes silence. Year 5 class ‘s’ led the assembly, which focused on respect, the Junior Boys theme for this term. The class sang ‘Last night I had the strangest dream’ and recited the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

Year 2 girls and boys also visited Stubbings Church to lay the wreath they'd created, and remember those who had passed during World War 1 and 2.

At College Avenues, upper Junior Girls, Senior Girls, Sixth Form and staff came together for a minutes silence on Monday. Administrative Principal Hugh Wilding read the names of former students who died in the first World war and Senior Girls Head of Music Dan Gravett played the last post on his trumpet.

Senior Boys also held a minutes silence on Monday, and in an assembly the history department went in to more detail about Armistice Day and introduced the Cliveden project which several Year 11 pupils have been involved in.
