GCSE Grade Commentary by the Academic Principal

James Wilding, Academic Principal was delighted with the results saying, “87% of the cohort gained a C pass or higher in English, and 92% a C pass or higher in Maths, compared to the national statistics for England of 66.3% and 69% respectively.”

“For all schools in the maintained sector, their English and Maths GCSEs results follow the new numerical grading system.  As with most other independent schools, we make use of the iGCSE curriculum for English and Maths, where the assessment system does not change to the numerical gradings until next year. However most of our students did sit the new English and English Literature GCSE this summer, and it’s quite clear from the outcomes that our students have really enjoyed the new terminal English Literature curriculum, scoring 93.3% (in comparison 72% national) level 4 gaining a pass and 67% gaining a level 5 or better, being a ‘strong’ pass.

Because the cohort of pupils in our school varies from year to year, the variation we see in results is very much due to the broad ability of our intake. Having said that, the girls’ year on year improvement is of particular note and I am delighted both for the pupils and the teachers, who have exceeded expectations!  Paul Bevis, Head of Girls and Sixth Form is leaving for pastures new, and I know just how pleased he is with these results, and deservedly so, a great tribute to one of the sector’s finest school leaders. Amongst  girls’ subjects, those showing 100% success at C grade or higher include English literature, Food & Nutrition, History, Physical Education, Religious Studies and Spanish.

The top students in the cohort have excelled, as have so many of those of much more modest abilities too and the vast majority are very well set for the next steps in their education. With 87% of the cohort gaining a C pass or higher in English, and 92% a C pass or higher in Maths, these are the most noteworthy outcomes in 2017, given the national statistics for England in comparison of 66.3% and 69% respectively. For my teaching staff, I am particularly pleased  for the Head of Art, Jan Price, whose boys gained 100% C grade or higher this summer.  She retires this year after 26 years of amazing service to the school, and she leaves a fantastic department in very good health indeed.”
