Speech Day 2019

On Thursday 19 September, we welcomed over 1000 invited guests, parents, pupils and friends of the School to the annual Speech Day and Prize Giving ceremony held at the Magnet Leisure Centre. The afternoon recognised pupils’ successes in 2018-2019, and also celebrated Claires Court’s Sixth Form Silver Anniversary.

The event was filled with impressive musical renditions, including ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ by Ashford and Simpson, sung by the Senior Girls Harmony Choir. Head Girl Kayla Raeburn-James and Head Boy James Lambert also entertained the audience with a slideshow of images capturing the year.

Guest speaker, Peter Woodroffe, former Junior Boys pupil and Deputy CEO of the Independent Schools Association, spoke of his fond memories of his time at the school and how it ignited his love for musical theatre. He gave advice to pupils about the importance of being resilient and encouraged them to ask ‘big questions’ and be curious about the world we live in.

Reflecting on the event, Peter Woodroffe said: “It was an honour to be invited and it was wonderful to be back at Claires Court and to see that the values and ethos that I benefitted from 30 years ago are still very much present, with the development of the whole pupil as the core focus.”

Current Head Boy, James Lambert, commented: “At Claires Court you have the ability to pursue opportunities you feel passionate about, it seems that no matter what you want to pursue in life, in academia, work and sport, there is always someone there to guide and support.”

James Wilding, Claires Court Academic Principal and Head of Senior Boys, added:

“This year we achieved our best GCSE results in a decade, which is a stunning reflection of everyone's hard work. As our Sixth Form celebrates the Silver Anniversary of its foundation, we've seen a return to the same style of A Levels as then, where the academic outcomes are solely judged by performance in Year 13, bringing to a conclusion the examination reforms of the last five years. We’ve maintained a strong A*-C performance; our departing Year 13’s are certainly well set for their next stages in life and leave us as mature, confident and capable individuals.”
