National Apprenticeship Week

Kim Martin visited the Sixth Form this week in her capacity as the Schools Team Regional Advisor for ASK (Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge for schools). ASK is funded by the National Apprenticeship Service, part of the Department for Education and its role is to raise awareness of the levels and variety of apprenticeship opportunities available and run information workshops for students, parents, teachers and senior leaders.

On Monday, Kim did exactly that, talking to our students about the types of apprenticeship available including an increasing number of degree apprenticeships which result in exactly the same qualification as any degree bestowed by a university without the debt! This certainly got their attention.

She signposted the national and international blue chip companies offering intermediate, advanced and higher apprenticeships too, highlighting Google, Sky, BBC, GSK, PWC, Rolls Royce, and IBM among others.

Kim also did some myth busting in demonstrating apprenticeships are not only available in trades in this modern era, but are also found in accounting, finance journalism, legal services, cyber security, education and in the creative and digital sector, for example.

It was interesting to the students to know that as their visitor spoke there were 96 apprenticeships within 5 miles of our school being advertised, 306 within 10 miles and 1,222 in a 20 mile radius of SL6 6AW! She did explain how much competition there is for each one and that students will need to apply for numerous opportunities to find the most suitable opening. Nationally there are 28,000 apprenticeships being advertised!

Stephanie Rogers, Head of Careers and Head of Year 12, will share the comprehensive presentation with parents.

Sophie Lucas, Year 12, said:

“I am going to start researching project management apprenticeships at Rolls Royce and the BBC. I had no idea there were so many fantastic opportunities out there!”

Another student said:

"I am definitely going to do some research into apprenticeships. I had no idea there were so many fantastic opportunities!”

Our Sixth Form students also wrote down what they want to be in the future:
