Junior Girls Celebrate Greenaway Medal Winner
Junior Girls Book Club members celebrated the announcement of this year's CILIP Greenaway Medal Winner: There is a Tribe of Kids by Lane Smith.
This picture book explores the power of collective nouns and the importance of play and exploration. In his speech, Smith credited leading British illustrators, including Brian Wildsmith, Quentin Blake and Helen Oxenbury - with their stylised and quirky techniques - as his inspiration as a young illustrator starting out.
All the girls who took part in our 'award shadowing' challenge, by reading and voting for their own favourite book, were rewarded for all their hard work and enthusiasm with a party and a certificate to recognise their efforts. With eight books on each award shortlist, all the girls involved are our own reading champions!
The CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Children's Book Awards are the oldest and most prestigious UK book awards, presented to the best novel and the best illustrated book for children. This year's Carnegie Medal winner is Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, a fictionalised account of the worst maritime disaster in history.
