Head to Head for National 7’s Rugby
Claires Court blew the field away at the 2016 ISA National rugby 7’s competition last week.
With many of the U16 squad coming off the back of playing in a mentally and physically gruelling U18 tournament at Windsor, the ISA competition was an opportunity for the players to show what they had learned from playing against some of the country's best U18’s. The response was emphatic, Claires Court won their group with an unbeaten record scoring 23 tries and conceding none in the process with scores of 43-0, 48-0 and 56-0. In the meantime the Claires Court U16B team - bolstered by the inclusion of three U15’s in their squad - also managed to qualify for the quarter finals of the main competition by virtue of finishing second in their group behind LVS Ascot who defeated them 22-5 in the opening game.
The knockout rounds of the competition continued in a similar vein for Claires Court A team. They dispatched Shapwick from Somerset 52-0 in the quarter final before defeating Stafford Grammar 54 -7 in the semi final. The B team beat Abbey Gate School from Cheshire comfortably setting them up with a semi final against LVS (who they had lost to earlier in the day) for a place in the final. After scoring an early converted try Claires Court defended stoically in appalling weather conditions. A late LVS try went unconverted leaving the full time scoreline 7-5 to Claires Court setting up an all Claires Court final, a truly remarkable achievement.
The final proved a step too far for the B team and Claires Court A team ran out 33-0 winners (their smallest margin of victory in the tournament) to round off a great day of rugby for the school.
