Extracting DNA From A Strawberry!

Year 11 boys have been studying the beautiful molecule of DNA in their biology lessons. They learned that DNA can be extracted from cells and amazingly the strawberry is an excellent source of DNA as it has eight copies of each chromosome so a lot of DNA can be extracted.

The boys put this to test, taking part in an experiment extracting DNA from strawberries. During their experiment, pupil Matteusz managed to coil the most DNA using a glass rod.

Sharon Wolton, Head of Biology, said:

“It’s so important for pupils to apply their learning practically, and the pupils were very impressed as the DNA appeared!”
