A War Memorial for Maidenhead College, 1914-1921
From 1891 when it was opened until 1947 when it was sold, our College Avenue site was home to a private school for boys (variously “The College School, Maidenhead” and “Maidenhead College”). For most of these years the College was owned by the Inglis family but unfortunately no formal records survive to tell us its story. Building on research started by Year 10 boys in JOPA week, July 2014 and drawing on census, civil registration, military and other records, some 160 pupils, staff and family associated with the College have so far been identified with about 50 serving in some military capacity between 1914 and 1921.
Of these, at least twelve died on active service and this work-in-progress (which can be viewed online at https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/696) seeks to create a memorial for them.
