Tennis in Egypt!

Whilst we were experiencing cold and snowy weather here, Giacomo in Year 12 travelled to the warmer climes of Cairo, Egypt, for his first International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament.

Out of 64 qualifying players, Giacomo was one of eight to make it to the main draw. The first time a player participates in an ITF tournament, he or she typically does not go past the qualifying stages, however, Giacomo played very well in his first three matches, by beating in turn an Egyptian, a Spanish and an Italian opponent.

Giacomo thus qualified into the main draw of 64 players (56 directly accepted plus the 8 qualifiers). He won his first and second round matches by displaying high-quality ground strokes, clever approaches to the net and solid serves. He reached the round of the last 16 - which is the minimum target to be awarded ITF points - but then lost in three sets against a more experienced Spanish player in a tight match. Well done to Giacomo for this tremendous achievement!
