U11 Chess Jamboree
The Junior Boys Under 11 chess squad spent Wednesday afternoon at the Abbey Junior School playing in the Berkshire School Jamboree.
The team included: Niam Popat, Kyle Wheeler, Aaron Johnson, Aaron Mussell and Alex Pearce.
Richard Hogg, Teacher and Chess Master said;
“We went into the event as holders of the title so we were not expecting the easiest of draws, though the last-minute withdrawal of another school also worked against us.
After a challenging first round we recovered to finish third from eight teams. This was a good result and the boys should be proud of their achievements and medals.
Special mention goes to Alex Pearce as he found himself playing in an amalgamated team made up of Board 5 players in order to make up for the missing school. Alex found himself playing against Board 1 players and not only held his own but scored 3/4, beating the winning team's Board 1 in the process! Very well done, Alex!
We look forward to seeing what the Under 9 teams can achieve next week.
