Putting Fieldwork into Practice

A trip to Reading town centre saw our Year 12 geographers put into practice their learning as they undertook several fieldwork elements for their A Level course, looking in detail at Human Geography.

This was a great opportunity for the students to practice their fieldwork techniques as half of the class focused on three sites in West Reading whilst the other half concentrated their efforts on three sites in East Reading. The students conducted their investigations using a range of skills, from anti-crime scores and environmental quality surveys, to no-participation observations and  Gilbert’s ‘eight-way thinking’. Once all of the data had been collected, the students discussed potential ways they could present the data.

Sarah Clifford, Sixth Form Geography teacher, commented:

“It was great for the students to be able to practice their fieldwork skills. In April the students will be going on their second field trip, this time to Eastbourne, to look at Physical Geography techniques they can use for investigating the coast.”
