‘Not I said the cat’

Children in the Nursery have been reading the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’. The story follows a hen who receives no help from the dog, the cat and the duck to plant seed, harvest the wheat, grind to make flour or bake the bread.
However they all wanted to eat it once it was ready but obviously the hen did not want to share with them. The story taught the children a great deal about the importance of being helpful, hard work and the consequences of laziness.
Using finger puppets the boys and girls retold the story of the little red hen and correctly repeated the refrains "not I said the cat, not I said the rat, not I said the pig" as they moved each character up and down.
They children also looked at how wheat becomes flour as part of the story and made bread, squeezing and pummelling the dough.
