Cooking Competition Heats Up!

As part of the Rotary Young Chef Competition, Claires Court held two of their internal heat competitions for Year 9 pupils this week. One was on Tuesday 24 January and the other Friday 27 January. A big thank you to Zizzi’s Head Chef Chris Collier and General Manager Tony Harris, of the Windsor branch, for judging both the competitions. Just one pupil out of the two winners of the internal competition will go on to the District Finals to be held at Claires Court on Saturday 4 February.

The competition has been established to encourage the development of cookery skills in young people. They have been tasked to prepare a three course meal in two hours that’s healthy and will feed two people for under £15. Pupils will be judged on various criteria such as costing, presentation, range of skills used and taste.

Year 9 Cookery Competition WinnerThe winner from Tuesday’s competition was Madeleine Burwash who made a pizza base using cauliflower and topped with delicious ingredients.

The winner from Friday’s competition was Jasmine Parr who made a salmon teriyaki disk service with rice.

The winners of the competition were given a cookbook and all pupils who took part received a voucher for Zizzis.

Tony Harris, General Manager at Zizzi’s Windsor commented;

“The standard was absolutely amazing, and a few of the dishes I would be happy to serve in my restaurant. The girls had incredible understanding and knowledge of cooking along with great prep work, it was a close competition. Overall the girls were really engaged and can inspire to be great chefs if they want to be.”

The heats were organised by the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Bridge, and the Club Vice President, Michael Atherton said, "Rotary offers a number of youth competitions such as this one, and it is a great opportunity for young people to engage with the catering world on a level beyond that of the national curriculum.  Winners of these heats have the potential to win a national competition - and hopefully it will inspire all of the competitors to explore the world of food a little more".
