Presenting Their Heroine in Science

A team of four Year 11 girls spent a fascinating afternoon at Reading University on International Women's Day, 8 March. The focus of the afternoon was Heroines of Science and teams from a number of schools gave a presentation on their Heroine of Science. Freya, Cami, Maddy and Zainab were unique amongst all of the teams, in that they focused on an individual who is having an impact on the scientific world now, rather than a historical figure.

Katherine Smart founded a university department at The University of Nottingham, working in the area of fermentation, namely brewing! They "wanted to show that science today is just as relevant in inspiring young women into the STEM fields" and as her work "not only brings her joy but also to others". The group researched not only her work, but also her career path. They presented confidently to an audience which included university lecturers and other students and should be very proud of their achievement.
