Bristol Grammar School Chess Tournament

The English Primary Schools Chess Association (EPSCA) tournament, held at Bristol Grammar School, is always a special event in the Claires Court Chess calendar.
In spite of a very early start, with several boys up by six, Claires Court was able to field two teams, one Under 9 and one Under 11. Both teams had earned their place through qualification earlier in the year.
Mr Richard Hogg, Teacher at Junior Boys summarised:
“I am delighted to report that every player contributed, winning at least one game. Even though this was the first experience of this level of tournament play for so many of the squad, they performed very well indeed, representing the school with distinction.
The Under 11 team came up against some very strong teams. Teo Rybak on Board 1 was drawn against several tough opponents including the British Junior Champion.
The team walked away with a Bronze Award. As this year's Under 11s were mostly from Year 5 I look forward to seeing what they can achieve next year.
Our Under 9 group was, like last year, one of the youngest teams in the whole competition and was led by Hou Ning Zhu (Kida) who went unbeaten on the day and scored an excellent 4.5 out of 5 on Board 1.
The team earned a Silver Award, only missing out on a Gold by half a point. Like the Under 11 team, most of the Under 9s will be able to play at Under 9 level next year too. This suggests excellent prospects for 2018.
The full squad was as follows:
Under 11
Teo Rybak
Nayan Popat
Alex Pearce
Tavish Gangwani
Haider-Ali Baig
Theo Sullivan
Under 9
Hou Ning Zhu
Josh Sharma
Joshua Spanswick
Moksha Suriarachchi
Samuel Tschiesche
Zack Sullivan
Very well done, boys. You did Claires Court proud.”
