Meet the Head & Pupils

Head of Senior boys

John Rayer is often the first person the boys meet in the morning. Renowned for welcoming them in off the buses, his friendly chats, approachable manner and love of sport and nature, means he is described by the boys as balanced, fair and inspiring.

"When I see a boy progress and achieve above and beyond expectations, seeing the realisation on his face that he has been successful, makes my day worthwhile."

How do you ensure each pupil at Senior Boys feels valued?

We focus our efforts on finding out about each individual, not just by testing but by developing a rapport between pupils and staff.  This interaction allows us to see each boys true potential. We then work together to make sure we achieve this.  Parents often play a big part in these conversations too.

What makes Senior Boys a great educational experience?

It goes far beyond the fact that we have quality teaching and excellent resources.  It centres around a positive learning environment.  Ensuring there are specific assessment processes and feedback for pupils is key so that they know their goals.  Our strong ethos as defined through our values provides a structure that boys believe in and one that has clear boundaries and expectations.

Who inspired you to teach?

My earliest role model was the Headteacher at my Junior School, Howard Spriggs and Keith Widdowson who in Year 7 introduced me to Outward Bound. Their inspiration showed me what could be achieved. I hope I instil the same values to the pupils at Senior Boys.
