Claires Court Sailors Excel at Prestigious Itchenor Schools Week
Claires Court’s sailing programme continues to cement its reputation among the UK’s elite, following a highly successful campaign at this year's Itchenor Schools Week. Hosted by the Itchenor Sailing Club, the historic championship has been bringing together the nation's leading school sailing teams since 1953.
In a highly competitive 70-boat Firefly fleet, Claires Court entered four teams, with our sailors demonstrating exceptional skill, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout a demanding racing schedule.

Tactical Mastery Overcomes Equipment Disadvantage
Our leading pair, Sam B. and Victoria J., produced a masterclass in consistency to secure a magnificent 8th place finish overall. Their regatta featured two 3rd place finishes against the country's most experienced school crews.
What made their achievement particularly remarkable was the equipment gap; Sam B. and Victoria J. were racing one of the oldest Fireflies in the fleet, using significantly weathered sails compared to rival top-ten crews, some of whom unfolded brand-new sails specifically for the event. Their top-ten finish is a clear testament to their superior tactical awareness, boat handling, and seamless teamwork.
Adding to the celebration, Sam B.’s recent racing pedigree has caught the attention of higher education. Earlier this year, he was approached by the University of East Anglia with expressions of interest regarding a sailing scholarship. This outstanding endorsement reflects both Sam B.’s personal dedication and the high standard of the coaching framework at Claires Court.
Growth and Silverware Across the Fleet
The school’s remaining crews showed immense progress as the regatta progressed, navigating tough conditions and a crowded fleet:
- Henry A. and Monty M. sailed a determined week to finish 35th overall, earning the event’s traditional Middle Boat Trophy for placing exactly mid-fleet.
- Haydn S. and Isaac J. showed great resilience, bouncing back from a series of difficult early races to secure a commendable 47th place.
- Felix R. and Jacob S. completed the championship in 65th place. For several of these young sailors, this was their debut at a national regatta of this scale, providing them with an invaluable foundation for future campaigns.

Proud Representatives On and Off the Water
"Beyond the final results, I was particularly pleased with the way the students conducted themselves. They represented Claires Court with maturity, resilience, and enthusiasm both on and off the water."
The camaraderie within the squad was a highlight of the week, with crews constantly supporting one another through the grueling schedule.
We extend our sincere thanks to the school community and parents for their continued support of the Claires Court sailing programme. Opportunities to compete at historic fixtures like Itchenor Schools Week are vital for developing our students—not just as elite sailors, but as well-rounded young people.
Congratulations to all of our competitors. On to the next regatta!
